LASIK surgery is generally not painful thanks to numbing drops and sometimes mild sedation. Most people feel only pressure and brief discomfort.
During LASIK
The suction ring that creates the flap can cause a tight feeling and temporary dimming of vision. The laser step itself is painless.
- You may hear clicking and smell a faint odour from the laser
- Any pain is unusual and immediately treated with more anaesthetic
- The procedure for each eye takes just a few minutes
- Staff talk you through each stage for reassurance
After LASIK
Once anaesthetic wears off, mild burning, watering, and light sensitivity are common for a few hours. Pain is usually mild.
- Simple painkillers and a nap after surgery often help
- Severe pain, especially if the eye has been rubbed, needs urgent review
- Most people are comfortable enough to resume many activities by the next day
- Dryness rather than pain is the more frequent long-term sensation
