Is lower blepharoplasty surgery painful?

< 1 min read

Lower blepharoplasty surgery can cause more tightness and bruising than upper lid surgery, but it is still usually well controlled with anaesthetic and pain relief. You should not feel sharp pain during the operation itself.

Intra-operative comfort

Numbing injections around the lower lids make the area insensitive to cutting. Some pressure and pulling sensations are normal.

  • Stinging from injections is brief and quickly fades
  • Sedation can make you relaxed or drowsy during longer procedures
  • Pain levels are monitored throughout and extra anaesthetic provided if needed
  • Many procedures use incisions hidden inside the lid or just beneath the lashes

Recovery discomfort

After surgery, the lower lids may feel sore, heavy, or tight. Bruising is common but usually not severely painful.

  • Cold packs and head elevation help reduce throbbing
  • Simple pain tablets are often enough; stronger medicine is rarely needed
  • Report severe pain, sudden swelling, or vision changes urgently
  • Most tenderness improves significantly over one to two weeks
