SMILE and LASEK both offer laser vision correction, but their techniques lead to different experiences. SMILE works through a tiny incision inside the cornea, whereas LASEK is a surface procedure.
How each surgery is done
In SMILE, a femtosecond laser shapes and removes a small internal disc of tissue through a keyhole cut. LASEK uses alcohol to loosen the surface layer, moves it aside, applies excimer laser, and replaces the layer with a bandage lens.
- SMILE keeps the outer cornea largely intact and flap-free
- LASEK affects a broader surface area and needs longer healing time
- SMILE patients usually experience rapid visual recovery and mild discomfort
- LASEK often causes several days of soreness and blur
Who might choose which
Both can give excellent vision when carefully matched to patient needs. Corneal thickness, shape, and lifestyle demands guide the recommendation.
- LASEK may be used when the cornea is too thin for SMILE or LASIK
- SMILE can be attractive for those worried about dry eye or flap issues
- Sports or physical jobs may favour SMILE’s robust corneal structure
