What are the early warning signs of AMD?

< 1 min read

Early warning signs of age-related macular degeneration can be subtle, often affecting reading and detailed tasks first. Noticing them promptly allows earlier assessment and support.

Subtle changes in central vision

AMD mainly affects the macula, the area responsible for sharp sight. You may find everyday close work gradually more difficult.

  • Words on a page look blurred, faded, or harder to focus on
  • Colours appear less vivid or contrast feels reduced
  • Faces become harder to recognise, especially in low light
  • You need brighter lighting for reading or sewing

Distortion and monitoring

As AMD progresses, straight lines may start to look bent or wavy. Regular self-checks and eye exams help track changes.

  • Use an Amsler grid or similar chart to spot new distortion
  • Cover each eye separately when checking, as one may hide problems in the other
  • Seek urgent review if you notice sudden distortion or a dark central patch
  • Discuss diet, smoking cessation, and supplement advice with your clinician
