Can I shower after cataract surgery?

< 1 min read

You can usually shower soon after cataract surgery, but it is important to keep water, shampoo, and soap out of your eye while it heals. This lowers the risk of irritation and infection.

First Week

Extra care is needed around the operated eye.

  • Shower with your eyes closed and avoid directing the spray at your face.
  • If water or products enter the eye, do not rub; allow them to rinse away gently and then use lubricating drops.
  • Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, and saunas, which pose higher infection risks.
  • Pat around the eye dry with a clean towel rather than rubbing.

After the First Week

Restrictions gradually ease as the incision seals and comfort improves.

  • You can usually return to a more normal shower routine while still avoiding vigorous eye rubbing.
  • Ask your surgeon about timing for swimming and underwater activities.
  • Continue all eye drops as prescribed, including after showering.
  • Report ongoing irritation, discharge, or blurred vision for assessment.
