What are soft contact lenses?

< 1 min read

Soft contact lenses are flexible lenses made from water‑containing plastics or silicone hydrogels, offering immediate comfort for most wearers. They are the most commonly used lens type.

Properties

Their larger size and flexibility mean they drape over the cornea and move only slightly with each blink. Modern materials allow high oxygen transmission, especially in silicone hydrogel designs.

  • Available as daily, weekly, fortnightly, or monthly replacement options
  • Come in spherical, toric, and multifocal designs
  • Suitable for a wide range of prescriptions and lifestyles
  • More prone to deposit build‑up and tearing than rigid lenses

Use and Care

Soft lenses require appropriate cleaning (for reusable types), adherence to replacement schedules, and regular professional aftercare. Comfort can be excellent when they are fitted and maintained correctly.

  • Discuss any dryness or discomfort early so adjustments can be made
  • Do not sleep in lenses unless specifically advised
  • Always have spectacles as an alternative for non‑wear periods
  • Follow hygiene and solution instructions precisely
