How do I use eye drops after cataract surgery?

< 1 min read

Eye drops after cataract surgery help control inflammation, reduce infection risk and support healing. They need to be used exactly as prescribed and for the full course.

Instillation and schedule

Before putting in drops, wash and dry the hands, then gently pull down the lower lid and instil a single drop into the pocket without touching the eye or lashes with the bottle tip. When more than one type of drop is prescribed, they are usually spaced a few minutes apart to prevent dilution.

  • Shake bottles that are labelled to be shaken before use
  • Follow the tapering schedule for steroid drops as directed
  • Discard bottles at the recommended time after opening
  • Contact the clinic if doses are missed for an extended period or if significant pain or vision loss occurs
