Screen-related eye strain arises when prolonged close work and reduced blinking place extra demand on the focusing and tear systems. Adjusting the visual environment can lessen symptoms for many people.
Practical adjustments
Positioning screens slightly below eye level, at arm’s length, and minimising glare from windows or overhead lights can improve comfort. Building short, regular breaks into work patterns allows the focusing muscles to relax and encourages blinking.
- Apply the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds
- Increase font size and contrast rather than leaning closer to the screen
- Use artificial tears if dryness or burning develops during screen use
- Have refraction checked to ensure any glasses match current needs
