Uveitis is inflammation of the uveal tract, which includes the iris, ciliary body and choroid. It can affect the front, middle or back of the eye and may be linked to systemic inflammatory or autoimmune disease.
Symptoms and types
Common symptoms are redness, pain, light sensitivity and blurred vision. Anterior uveitis involves the front of the eye, while intermediate and posterior forms affect the vitreous and retina.
- Can be acute and short-lived or chronic and recurrent
- May occur in isolation or as part of a wider systemic condition
- Treatment often includes steroid drops, injections or tablets
- Close monitoring is needed to detect raised pressure or cataract
