A chalazion is a firm, painless or mildly tender lump in the eyelid caused by blockage of a Meibomian oil gland. It may follow or coexist with an inflamed stye.
How chalazia develop
Oil becomes trapped within the gland and surrounding tissue, leading to a slow-growing cyst. Small chalazia often settle with warm compresses and lid care, while larger or persistent ones may need a minor procedure.
- More common in people with blepharitis or oily skin
- Usually not related to cancer, but recurrent lesions should be assessed
- Warm compresses and gentle massage help drainage
- Surgical drainage can be performed from the inside of the lid if needed
