Gold weight implantation places a small gold or platinum weight inside the upper eyelid to help it close in facial palsy. The extra weight allows gravity to assist lid closure and protects the eye surface from exposure.
How gold weights are used
Through an incision in the eyelid crease, the weight is fixed to the tarsal plate and the skin is closed so that it is concealed. People can usually still open the eye normally but achieve better closure when blinking or sleeping.
- Helps prevent exposure, dryness and corneal damage
- Weight size is chosen to balance protection with appearance
- The implant can be adjusted or removed if facial function improves
- Regular follow-up checks lid position and the health of the eye surface
