What is focal laser photocoagulation?

< 1 min read

Focal laser photocoagulation is a targeted laser treatment applied to small leaking areas in the retina. It is used for selected cases of diabetic macular oedema and other localised retinal leaks.

How focal laser works

Using detailed retinal imaging as a guide, the ophthalmologist applies small, precise laser spots to leaky microaneurysms or focal areas of swelling. The goal is to reduce fluid and stabilise vision while minimising damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

  • Usually performed in the clinic with dilating and numbing drops
  • Vision may be blurred for a short time after treatment
  • Benefits develop gradually over weeks to months
  • Further sessions may be needed if new leaking points appear
