Which ICL system and calculator do you use?

3 min read

The EVO Visian ICL, manufactured by STAAR Surgical, is the most widely implanted phakic IOL in the world and carries the largest published safety and efficacy dataset of any device in its class. ¹ ² The current EVO+ generation incorporates a central port that maintains physiological aqueous circulation between the anterior and posterior chamber without requiring a peripheral iridotomy – a design change that eliminated a procedural step and reduced one mechanism of early pressure elevation.

Choosing a surgeon who uses the EVO Visian ICL matters. Choosing a surgeon who uses a validated, data-driven sizing calculator matters equally. Lens power and size calculation for ICL surgery depends on accurate anterior chamber depth, white-to-white diameter, and cycloplegic refraction. Errors in sizing produce the vault problems described elsewhere in this checklist; errors in power produce the residual ametropia that requires enhancement. ³

At Blue Fin Vision®, all ICL sizing and power calculations are performed using the STAAR Surgical STELLA calculator – the current generation calculation platform that incorporates modern anterior segment biometry and a refined sizing algorithm. Results are fed into an ongoing internal audit, allowing the practice to identify patterns in vault outcomes and refine calculation inputs over time. Patients should ask specifically which calculator is used, not simply which lens system – and whether the centre tracks its own outcomes against the calculator’s predictions.
