YAG laser treatment is a non-invasive laser procedure used for several eye conditions, most commonly to clear posterior capsular opacification after cataract surgery or to create a peripheral iridotomy in angle-closure glaucoma.
Posterior Capsulotomy
When the capsule behind an IOL becomes cloudy, the YAG laser makes a small central opening to restore a clear visual axis. The procedure is quick, painless, and performed in the clinic at the slit lamp.
- Vision usually sharpens over hours to days after treatment
- Floaters may be noticed temporarily following the laser
- Risks include transient pressure rise and very small risk of retinal detachment
- Capsulotomy is typically a one-time treatment
Peripheral Iridotomy
In narrow-angle or angle-closure glaucoma, the YAG laser creates a tiny hole in the peripheral iris to improve fluid flow from the posterior to anterior chamber. This can prevent or treat angle-closure attacks.
- Mild discomfort and light sensitivity are common shortly afterwards
- Eye pressure and the angle are checked after the procedure
- Some patients still require ongoing glaucoma medication or surgery
- Protective eyewear is not usually needed afterwards
