What is radiofrequency treatment?

< 1 min read

Radiofrequency treatment around the eyes uses controlled radiofrequency energy to gently heat the eyelid tissues. It is used for both cosmetic skin tightening and to help treat meibomian gland dysfunction.

Effect on Meibomian Glands

By warming the eyelids, radiofrequency can liquefy thick meibomian secretions and stimulate collagen remodelling. This may improve gland expression and lid contour.

  • Often combined with manual or mechanical gland expression
  • Sessions are typically brief with minimal downtime
  • Patients feel warmth and mild pressure but little pain
  • Multiple treatments are usually required for sustained benefit

Safety and Use

Radiofrequency devices must be used with appropriate eye protection and settings tailored to delicate periocular skin. It is one component within broader dry eye or aesthetic treatment plans.

  • Temporary redness or swelling of the skin can occur
  • Not suitable for patients with certain implants or skin conditions
  • Results for dry eye can vary; careful patient selection is important
  • Ongoing lid hygiene and lubrication remain necessary
