What is epi-LASIK eye surgery?

< 1 min read

Epi-LASIK is another surface laser technique in which a mechanical epikeratome separates a thin sheet of epithelium without alcohol. It aims to combine advantages of PRK and LASEK while avoiding chemical exposure.

Procedure Overview

The epikeratome creates an epithelial flap that is lifted, the excimer laser reshapes the cornea, and the flap is repositioned. A bandage contact lens protects the eye during healing.

  • May reduce epithelial toxicity compared with alcohol-assisted LASEK
  • Healing and comfort are similar to other surface treatments
  • No stromal flap leaves more biomechanical strength than LASIK
  • Technique is less widely used than PRK or LASIK in many centres

Outcomes

Visual results are generally comparable to other modern surface ablation methods when performed on suitable eyes. As with PRK and LASEK, recovery is slower than LASIK.

  • Suitable for patients where flap complications must be minimised
  • Regular post-operative reviews check epithelial integrity and clarity
  • Long-term stability is similar to equivalent LASIK corrections
  • Choice among surface procedures depends on surgeon preference and equipment
