Valsalva retinopathy is bleeding under the retina caused by a sudden rise in pressure in the chest, often after heavy lifting, coughing, or straining, and YAG laser can sometimes help clear the blood faster.
Understanding Valsalva retinopathy
The sudden pressure rise can burst a tiny retinal blood vessel, leading to a dense central haemorrhage and sudden blurred or missing central vision. Many cases slowly clear without intervention, but the wait can be worrying when vision is badly affected.
- Typically affects one eye and appears after a clear trigger event
- Peripheral vision often stays normal while the central area is blurred
- Retinal scans and photographs confirm the diagnosis
- Most people recover good vision as blood gradually reabsorbs
Role of YAG laser treatment
In selected cases, a precise YAG laser can be used to puncture the thin inner retinal membrane over the pooled blood so it disperses into the vitreous cavity, where it is absorbed more quickly. This is only considered when the bleed is well positioned and the potential benefits outweigh the risks.
- The procedure is done in the clinic with numbing drops
- Vision may improve over weeks as the blood clears
- Not everyone is suitable your specialist will explain options
- Preventing repeat strain episodes reduces the risk of recurrence
