LASEK and SMILE both aim to reduce dependence on glasses, but they use very different methods. LASEK is a surface procedure, while SMILE works within the cornea through a tiny incision.
How each treatment is performed
LASEK loosens the surface epithelium with alcohol, moves it aside, applies excimer laser, then replaces the layer. SMILE creates and removes a small internal disc of tissue via a keyhole cut using a femtosecond laser.
- LASEK involves a wider surface area and bandage contact lens
- SMILE leaves the top of the cornea largely intact without a large flap
- LASEK tends to cause more early discomfort and slower visual recovery
- SMILE patients usually return to everyday tasks quickly
Suitability and long-term considerations
Both can deliver good vision when eyes are carefully chosen. Individual risk factors and lifestyle guide which approach is best.
- LASEK may suit very thin or irregular corneas outside the SMILE range
- SMILE may reduce dry eye symptoms for some patients
- Contact sports players may value SMILE’s flap-free design
- Comprehensive assessment will highlight which option best balances safety and goals
