Is external Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) surgery painful?

< 1 min read

External DCR surgery is usually done under general anaesthetic or deep sedation, so you should not feel pain during the operation. Afterwards, discomfort is moderate but manageable with tablets.

On the day of surgery

A small incision is made beside the nose to create a new tear drainage channel. Anaesthesia keeps you comfortable throughout.

  • You may wake with a sore nose and cheek but not severe pain
  • Splints or tubes in the tear duct can cause mild awareness or irritation
  • Pain scores are regularly checked in recovery
  • Medication is adjusted if you feel too uncomfortable

Recovery period

Bruising and tenderness around the eye and nose are common for a week or two. These usually respond well to simple measures.

  • Cold compresses help reduce swelling and ache in the first days
  • Standard pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen is often enough
  • Sharp or worsening pain, especially with fever or discharge, needs review
  • Stitches and tubes are removed later with minimal discomfort
