Is entropion surgery painful?

< 1 min read

Entropion surgery to correct an inward-turning eyelid is generally well tolerated. Local anaesthetic prevents sharp pain during the operation, though you may feel some pressure.

Sensations during surgery

After numbing injections, the eyelid and surrounding skin become heavy and numb. You remain awake but comfortable.

  • Short-lived stinging occurs only while anaesthetic is given
  • You may sense gentle pulling or stitching but not cutting
  • Sedation can be used if you feel anxious
  • Any discomfort can be reported so more anaesthetic is added

After the operation

Post-operative discomfort is usually mild compared with pre-surgery irritation from lashes rubbing the eye. Pain tends to improve quickly.

  • Cold packs and head elevation reduce bruising and ache
  • Simple painkillers are normally sufficient
  • Report severe pain, increasing redness, or pus promptly
  • Most patients feel much more comfortable once the lid heals in its new position
