Facial palsy and gold weights

< 1 min read

In facial palsy, weakness of the facial nerve can stop the eyelids closing fully, and tiny gold or platinum weights in the upper lid can help protect the eye.

Why gold weights are used

When the upper lid does not close properly, the eye surface dries out and becomes vulnerable to scratches and infection. A small weight inserted into the lid helps it fall closed with gravity when you relax, while still allowing you to open the eye.

  • Especially helpful if facial nerve recovery is slow or uncertain
  • Weights are selected carefully so the lid moves naturally
  • Usually invisible to others once healed
  • Can be removed or adjusted if function improves

Procedure and living with a lid weight

The surgery is done under local anaesthetic, using a cut in the upper eyelid crease to place the weight within the lid tissues. Stitches close the skin, leaving a scar hidden in the natural fold.

  • Bruising and lid swelling are common for a week or two
  • Lubricating drops and ointment still support the eye surface
  • Many people notice easier blinking and less soreness quite quickly
  • Regular follow up checks comfort, cosmesis, and any nerve recovery
