SLT may cause brief mild discomfort but is usually not described as painful. Numbing drops are used before the laser begins.
Sensations during SLT
A contact lens is placed on the eye to focus the laser. You may see bright flashes and hear soft clicks.
- Some people feel a light pricking or tapping sensation
- Pain is typically rated very low and short-lived
- The procedure usually takes just a few minutes per eye
- Anxiety often reduces once the first few pulses are experienced
After SLT
Mild eye ache, redness, or headache can occur but normally passes quickly. Strong pain is unusual.
- Anti-inflammatory drops may be given for a few days
- Over-the-counter painkillers usually manage any soreness
- Contact your clinic if pain is severe or vision drops suddenly
- Pressure checks after treatment ensure the eye is responding safely
