Does PRK surgery hurt?

< 1 min read

PRK surgery itself is painless, but recovery can be more uncomfortable than LASIK or SMILE. The surface needs several days to regrow, causing soreness.

During the procedure

Numbing drops prevent pain while surface cells are removed and the laser reshapes the cornea.

  • You may feel pressure or see lights but not cutting
  • A bandage contact lens is placed at the end to protect the surface
  • The laser step is very quick
  • Any discomfort during surgery is uncommon

Recovery period

After PRK, moderate pain, burning, and watering are common for three to five days. Vision is blurred during this phase.

  • Pain relief tablets and sometimes stronger medication are provided
  • Cool compresses and resting with eyes closed help
  • Severe or prolonged pain should be reviewed promptly
  • Comfort usually improves once the bandage lens is removed
