Does orbital decompression surgery hurt?

< 1 min read

Orbital decompression surgery is a major operation, so some post-operative pain and discomfort are expected. However, strong anaesthesia prevents pain during the procedure itself.

In theatre

You are under general anaesthetic while bone and sometimes fat are removed to create more space around the eye.

  • You do not feel cutting or bone work during surgery
  • Pain medicines are given before you wake to stay ahead of discomfort
  • Dressings and eye ointment may cause a sensation of heaviness
  • Staff closely monitor pain in recovery and adjust medication

After surgery

Bruising, facial ache, and headache are common but usually manageable. Pain typically reduces over several days.

  • Stronger painkillers are prescribed initially, then reduced as you improve
  • Severe, worsening pain or new vision changes require urgent review
  • Sleeping propped up and using cold compresses help comfort
  • Most patients feel discomfort is acceptable given the improvement in pressure and appearance
