External DCR surgery is performed under general anaesthetic or deep sedation, so the operation itself does not hurt. Afterwards, there is moderate facial soreness and bruising that usually responds well to pain relief.
During surgery
You are asleep or very drowsy while a small cut is made beside the nose to create a new tear drainage channel.
- No awareness of cutting or bone work during the procedure
- Pain medicines are given before you wake to limit discomfort
- Tubes or stents may be placed but you do not feel this at the time
- Staff monitor pain closely in recovery
Post-operative discomfort
After surgery, a dull ache and tenderness around the nose and inner eye are common. These usually ease over several days.
- Cold compresses and standard painkillers control most discomfort
- Severe pain, heavy bleeding, or fever should be assessed promptly
- Stitches and stents are removed later with minimal discomfort
- Most people find watering and infections improve significantly once healed
