The three-snip procedure for tear duct opening is usually done under local anaesthetic in clinic. The injection may sting briefly, but the procedure itself should not be painful.
During the procedure
Numbing drops and a small injection at the inner corner of the eyelid quickly remove sharp sensation.
- You might feel a little pressure or wetness but not cutting
- The procedure is short, often less than fifteen minutes
- Any discomfort is managed with extra anaesthetic
- You can go home shortly afterwards
After the procedure
Mild soreness or stinging at the inner corner is common for a day or two. Pain is usually mild.
- Lubricating drops and ointment soothe irritation
- Simple painkillers are usually enough
- Significant pain, swelling, or discharge should be checked
- Most people find watering gradually improves as healing occurs
