Cost Comparison: Laser vs ICL vs Lens Replacement in the UK

3 min read

Cost is a legitimate consideration when comparing refractive procedures, but it is worth understanding why the prices differ, and what the cost of getting the decision wrong looks like.

Laser eye surgery is the most widely available refractive procedure in the UK, with treatment typically ranging between £4,000 and £5,000 per eye depending on the technology used. ICL surgery involves implanting a precisely manufactured intraocular lens and is a technically more complex intraocular procedure; costs generally range between £7,500 and £9,000 per eye, with toric ICL at the upper end. Lens replacement surgery is similarly priced to ICL, with additional variation depending on whether monofocal, toric, multifocal, or EDOF lens designs are used.¹ ² ³

Many laser clinics offer finance over two to three years. Blue Fin Vision® does not actively encourage the use of finance for elective surgery. The reasoning is straightforward: a patient financing a procedure on credit is taking on consumer debt for an elective medical decision. If the outcome falls short of expectations, even when technically excellent, some patients have attempted to cancel direct debit payments to their finance provider under the mistaken belief that this cancels the debt. It does not. The clinic has already been paid. The patient defaults on the credit agreement, which is reported to credit reference agencies and can materially affect the ability to obtain a mortgage, sometimes years later. This is a documented pattern in the UK laser surgery market.

The principle at Blue Fin Vision® is simple: the right time for elective surgery is when it can be afforded comfortably without financing. The procedures will still be available next year. A credit default is considerably harder to undo.
