Choroidal neovascularisation CNV treatment targets abnormal leaky vessels beneath the retina. The main goal is to preserve central vision and prevent scarring.
Anti-VEGF injections
Most CNV, whether from wet AMD, high myopia, or other causes, is treated with intravitreal anti-VEGF injections. These medicines reduce leakage and swelling.
- Initial monthly injections form a loading phase
- Intervals may then be extended based on scan findings
- OCT imaging monitors fluid, thickness, and response
- Long-term, intermittent treatment is common to keep CNV quiet
Additional and alternative approaches
In selected cases, other therapies may supplement or replace injections. Decisions depend on cause and response.
- Photodynamic therapy for certain lesions, particularly central serous variants
- Occasional use of thermal laser for well-defined extrafoveal CNV
- Low-vision aids and rehabilitation if scarring limits reading vision
- Control of underlying conditions, such as inflammation or myopia, where possible
