Adults with amblyopia cannot usually regain completely normal vision, but some improvement is sometimes possible. Treatment focuses on maximising use of the weaker eye and protecting overall visual function.
Optimising the weaker eye
Even in adulthood, careful assessment may reveal treatable causes. Small gains can still make daily tasks easier.
- Updated glasses or contact lenses to give the clearest possible image
- Treatment of cataract, corneal problems, or retinal disease if present
- Occlusion or blurred lens therapy in selected motivated adults
- Vision therapy or exercises through specialist clinics in some cases
Protecting long-term visual health
Because one eye is weaker, protecting the stronger eye is essential. Lifestyle choices and regular checks play a big role.
- Prompt attention to any new symptoms in either eye
- Use of protective eyewear for work, sport, and DIY
- Healthy habits such as not smoking and controlling general health
- Low-vision support if amblyopia combines with other conditions
