A veil over vision describes a hazy, film-like covering or shadow across sight. It can have several causes, some serious.
Common ocular causes
Clouding of the cornea, lens, or vitreous can create a veiled effect. Symptoms may develop gradually or suddenly.
- Cataract causing overall misty or glare-prone vision
- Corneal swelling from infection, injury, or contact lens over-wear
- Vitreous haemorrhage bleeding into the eye’s jelly
- Posterior capsular opacification after cataract surgery
Urgent causes
A sudden veil or curtain may indicate retinal detachment or stroke-like events. Immediate assessment is vital.
- Rapid onset, especially with flashes or floaters
- Dark curtain from the side, top, or bottom of vision
- Associated weakness, speech problems, or headache
- Seek emergency care rather than waiting for routine review
