What causes sandy feeling?

< 1 min read

A sandy feeling is a common description of dry or irritated eyes. It usually reflects an unstable or insufficient tear film.

Common Causes

Dry eye disease, meibomian gland dysfunction, blepharitis, and prolonged screen time reduce lubrication and leave the surface feeling rough. Post‑surgical states, environmental factors like wind or heating, and some medications contribute.

  • People may feel as if grit is trapped under the lids
  • Symptoms often worsen later in the day or with concentrated tasks
  • Contact lens wear can accentuate sandy sensations when the lens dries
  • Autoimmune conditions such as Sjögren’s syndrome are important systemic causes

Management

Lubricating drops, lid hygiene, environmental adjustments, and treating underlying disease usually improve comfort. Severe or persistent symptoms should be assessed to prevent surface damage.

  • Preservative‑free drops are preferable for frequent use
  • Humidifiers and reducing direct airflow help at home and work
  • Omega‑3 supplements and warm compresses may support gland function
  • Specialist care is important when systemic disease is suspected
