What causes retinal flashes?

< 1 min read

Retinal flashes are brief streaks or sparks of light, usually seen in the dark or with eye movements. They are commonly produced when the vitreous pulls on the retina.

Traction and other causes

Posterior vitreous detachment is the most frequent cause and can sometimes create retinal tears. Migraine aura and occipital lobe disturbances can also give flashing phenomena, but these usually last longer and affect both eyes together.

  • Flashes that are new, persistent or accompanied by floaters warrant urgent review
  • Retinal tears and detachments are important to detect early
  • Trauma and high myopia increase the risk of tractional events
  • Dilated retinal examination is required to rule out structural damage
