What causes eye pain?

< 1 min read

Eye pain can arise from problems on the surface of the eye, within the eye, or from surrounding structures such as the eyelids and nerves. Some causes are minor, while others require urgent attention.

Common Causes

Surface causes include dry eye, corneal abrasion, foreign bodies, and contact lens complications. Deeper or more serious sources include uveitis, scleritis, acute glaucoma, infection, and raised pressure around the eye or in the head.

  • Headache or sinus disease can refer pain to the eye area
  • Sudden severe pain with blurred vision, redness, or nausea can signal an emergency
  • Pain worsened by light may indicate inflammation inside the eye
  • Persistent deep ache can be linked with systemic or autoimmune disease

When to Seek Help

Mild surface irritation sometimes settles with lubrication and rest, but any significant pain, vision change, trauma, or chemical exposure needs prompt assessment. Early diagnosis protects sight and may reveal underlying health issues.

  • Do not continue wearing contact lenses if the eye is painful
  • Attend emergency care for sudden loss of vision, severe pain, or injury
  • Inform clinicians about any associated headaches, neurological, or systemic symptoms
  • A routine eye examination is advised if recurrent discomfort persists
