What causes burning sensation?

< 1 min read

Burning eyes feel hot, sore, or raw. This symptom often signals surface irritation, dryness, or allergy.

Typical Causes

Dry eye disease, blepharitis, and exposure to wind, smoke, or chemical fumes commonly cause burning. Allergic conjunctivitis, poorly tolerated eye drops, and unneutralised contact lens solutions can also produce intense stinging or burning.

  • Symptoms may increase in heated or air‑conditioned environments
  • Some preservatives and topical medications irritate sensitive surfaces
  • Contact lens wear amplifies burning when the surface is already inflamed
  • Chemical injuries can cause severe burning and require emergency irrigation

Approach

Identifying triggers and examining the ocular surface guides treatment. Lubricants, lid hygiene, anti‑allergy or anti‑inflammatory drops, and environmental modifications are typical interventions.

  • Any burning after applying new drops or solutions should be discussed with a clinician
  • Protective eyewear is advisable in dusty or chemical workplaces
  • Persistent or severe burning with redness and blur needs prompt review
  • Immediate copious irrigation is vital after chemical exposure
