What causes bloodshot eyes?

< 1 min read

Bloodshot eyes describe prominent red surface vessels across the white of the eye. The term often refers to diffuse conjunctival injection.

Typical Factors

Lack of sleep, alcohol, smoke exposure, and dry environments commonly produce temporary bloodshot appearance. Conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and contact lens overwear are frequent medical causes, while more serious disease such as uveitis or keratitis adds pain and sensitivity to light.

  • Systemic conditions like high blood pressure or autoimmune disease may contribute
  • Certain eye drops and preservatives can induce chronic redness
  • Subconjunctival haemorrhage looks different, as a sharply outlined red patch
  • Chronic bloodshot eyes may indicate underlying surface or lid disease

Management

Addressing triggers, using lubricants, and treating infection or inflammation usually improve bloodshot eyes. Persistent, painful, or unilateral cases should be examined.

  • Limiting alcohol and irritant exposure helps reduce recurrent redness
  • Decongestant drops are best avoided for long-term use
  • Proper contact lens hygiene is essential
  • Medical evaluation rules out serious underlying causes
