What causes aching eyes?

< 1 min read

Aching eyes describe a heavy, sore, or tired feeling rather than sharp pain. It commonly results from fatigue, strain, or dryness.

Everyday Causes

Long periods of reading or digital device use, uncorrected refractive error, and poor posture often cause aching around the eyes and brow. Dry eye, blepharitis, and sinus congestion can add to the sensation.

  • Ache may improve with rest, blinking, or stepping away from screens
  • Incorrect glasses strength frequently leads to peri‑orbital soreness
  • Jaw clenching and neck tension can contribute to eye ache
  • Low-grade uveitis or raised pressure may occasionally present as dull ache

Relief and When to Review

Optimising ergonomics, taking breaks, and treating dryness or lid disease usually help. Persistent ache with redness, photophobia, or blurred vision should be assessed to rule out pathology.

  • Regular eye tests ensure prescriptions and binocular balance are appropriate
  • Warm compresses and lid hygiene support surface comfort
  • Stress management and physical therapy can ease muscular contributions
  • Any worsening or new associated symptoms warrant prompt review
