Uveitis is inflammation inside the eye that can affect the front, middle, or back segments. Symptoms vary with the area involved.
Anterior uveitis symptoms
When the front of the eye is inflamed, pain and light sensitivity are common. Vision may blur as inflammation increases.
- Red eye, especially around the coloured iris
- Aching pain and tenderness
- Photophobia difficulty tolerating bright light
- Blurred or misty vision
Intermediate and posterior uveitis symptoms
Inflammation deeper in the eye may cause floaters and visual changes with less redness. These forms can be more subtle yet still serious.
- New floaters like cobwebs or spots
- Patchy blurring or distortion of central vision
- Reduced night or colour vision in some cases
- Prompt specialist care is needed to prevent permanent damage
