Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for detailed vision. Symptoms mainly involve central, not peripheral, vision.
Early and Dry AMD Symptoms
People may notice blurred or fuzzy central vision, needing more light for reading, and difficulty recognising faces. Straight lines can appear slightly wavy or less distinct.
- Central blur or a grey patch in the middle of vision
- Reduced contrast and colour intensity
- Slow adaptation when moving from bright to dim light
Wet AMD Symptoms
Wet AMD can cause sudden distortion, a dark central spot, or rapid loss of reading vision. These changes require urgent assessment, as prompt treatment improves outcomes.
