Lens replacement is essentially the same operation as cataract surgery but performed earlier; it is “better” when the main issue is refractive or presbyopic rather than a cloudy lens.
Situations favouring lens replacement
The lens is functionally the target even before cataract forms.
- Clear or only mild cataracts but very troublesome presbyopia
- High hyperopia or mixed prescriptions poorly served by corneal laser
- Strong desire for spectacle independence at multiple distances
- Age where future cataract development is likely within the next decade or two
- Willingness to accept intraocular lens‑related risks and costs
When standard cataract surgery remains preferable
Waiting until cataracts are visually significant is often sufficient.
- Minimal presbyopic symptoms or contentment with glasses
- Other medical or ocular issues where extra risk offers little extra benefit
- Financial or insurance arrangements covering standard but not elective surgery
- Uncertain motivation for surgery while vision is still good
