When is cataract surgery not necessary?

< 1 min read

Cataract surgery is not necessary when lens changes are mild, symptoms are minimal, and daily activities are not affected.

Situations where monitoring is enough

Many early cataracts cause little practical impact.

  • Comfortable driving, reading, and working with current glasses
  • Only subtle glare or colour changes that do not bother you
  • Stable vision and no safety concerns at home or outdoors
  • Other health priorities that outweigh the benefits of immediate surgery
  • Regular eye examinations planned to track any progression

Reasons to hold off even with symptoms

Sometimes delay is sensible despite some lens opacity.

  • Recent major illness or surgery needing recovery first
  • Temporary medication or health issues increasing anaesthetic risk
  • Inability at present to attend follow‑up or manage drops reliably
  • Personal preference to wait until benefits clearly outweigh worries
  • Clear plan to review and revisit the decision at a later date
