YAG capsulotomy can be suitable for blurry vision after cataract surgery if the blur is mainly due to posterior capsule opacification.
When blur points to PCO
Capsule haze has a characteristic pattern.
- Gradual, foggy blur rather than sudden distortion or dark patches
- Vision worse in bright light or when looking at oncoming headlights
- Optometrist or ophthalmologist seeing a cloudy capsule behind the lens
- Vision improving temporarily with pupil dilation or brightening during testing
- Little change in refraction, suggesting the lens power is still appropriate
When other causes must be excluded
Blur can arise from many conditions.
- Check for dry eye, new refractive error, or corneal problems
- Macular and retinal examination to rule out disease at the back of the eye
- Assessment for glaucoma or optic‑nerve issues
- Only proceeding to YAG once PCO is clearly the main contributor
- Explanation that further tests may follow if blur persists after YAG
