Is cataract surgery suitable if vision is still good?

< 1 min read

Cataract surgery can be suitable even when your vision still measures well on the chart if the lens changes are beginning to interfere with daily life or are clearly progressing.

When earlier surgery can be reasonable

Quality of vision, not just letter‑chart scores, guides the decision.

  • Glare, ghosting, or reduced contrast that affects driving, work, or hobbies
  • Struggling with low light, night driving, or oncoming headlights
  • Frequent prescription changes that no longer give stable clarity
  • Cataracts that look moderate on examination and are likely to worsen
  • Preference to plan surgery while you feel fit and have support available

When it is better to wait and monitor

Very early cataracts that do not bother you can usually be left alone.

  • Comfortable driving, reading, and screen use with current glasses
  • Minimal glare or colour change and no safety concerns
  • Other medical issues that temporarily increase anaesthetic risk
  • Wish to defer surgery until there is a clearer day‑to‑day benefit
  • Regular reviews arranged to watch for change in symptoms or lens appearance
