When does vision stabilise after oculoplastic surgery?

< 1 min read

Vision after oculoplastic surgery often feels blurry at first due to swelling, ointment, and surface dryness. For most people, sight stabilises over one to four weeks as tissues settle.

Early visual changes

Eyelid position and swelling can temporarily alter how light enters the eye. This is usually short-lived.

  • Ointment may smear vision until it is absorbed or gently wiped away.
  • Dry eye symptoms are common and can blur sight intermittently.
  • Double vision is rare but should be reported urgently.
  • Your glasses prescription normally stays the same.
  • Reading may feel difficult for a few days, especially after upper lid surgery.

Longer-term clarity

As swelling subsides, vision generally returns to your pre-surgery baseline or better. Any persistent change should be checked.

  • Most people feel vision has stabilised by around a month.
  • Improved eyelid position may actually enhance comfort and field of view.
  • Report ongoing blur, shadowing, or eye strain at review visits.
  • Lubricating drops and warm compresses often improve comfort.
  • Routine eye tests can refine glasses once healing is complete.
