When does tear duct function after surgery

Tear duct surgery aims to restore proper drainage but function does not return instantly. It is common to have some watering for several weeks while swelling settles.

How the new passage heals

During DCR or other tear duct operations a fresh channel is created. A silicone stent often guides tears through this route as tissues knit together.

Inflammation temporarily narrows the passage so tears may still spill. Improvement is usually gradual not sudden.

Typical timing of improvement

Most people notice a change in watering over the first month. Full benefit can take several months.
