After oculoplastic surgery, swelling and bruising around the eyes are very common. Discomfort is usually mild to moderate and can be managed with simple pain relief and cold compresses.
Immediately after surgery
Your eyelids may feel tight, heavy, or numb. Stitches, dressings, or small tapes are often used to support the area.
- Vision may be slightly blurred from ointment or swelling.
- Bruising often looks worse over the first few days before improving.
- Ice packs wrapped in a soft cloth can reduce swelling and discomfort.
- Prescribed drops and ointments help prevent infection and dryness.
- You will receive instructions about sleeping positions and activity limits.
Healing over the following weeks
Most bruising and swelling settle gradually over two to four weeks. Final scar appearance and lid shape continue to refine for several months.
- Stitches are usually removed within a week, depending on the technique.
- Mild tightness, lumpiness, or itching are part of normal healing.
- Report increasing pain, redness, or discharge promptly.
- Protect scars from sun with sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen.
- Attend all follow-up visits so your surgeon can monitor progress.
