What to expect after external Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) surgery

< 1 min read

After external DCR surgery, most people notice reduced watering once healing progresses, although early bruising and tenderness are common.

First days after surgery

You will usually have a small incision near the side of the nose and sometimes a fine tube in the tear duct. The eye and nose area may feel blocked, sore, and bruised.

  • Mild to moderate discomfort is common and managed with pain relief
  • There may be blood-stained tears or slight nasal bleeding
  • Swelling and bruising around the eye and cheek are expected
  • Use prescribed drops, ointment, and nasal sprays exactly as advised
  • Avoid blowing your nose forcefully in the early days

Improvement over the following weeks

As bruising settles, tearing usually lessens and comfort improves. The small scar typically fades with time.

  • Stitches are often removed after about one week if not dissolvable
  • The silicone tube, if present, may stay in place for several weeks or months
  • Most people feel social bruising reduces significantly over two weeks
  • Contact the clinic urgently if pain worsens or vision drops suddenly
  • Attend all follow-up visits to monitor healing and tube position
