After external DCR surgery, most people notice reduced watering once healing progresses, although early bruising and tenderness are common.
First days after surgery
You will usually have a small incision near the side of the nose and sometimes a fine tube in the tear duct. The eye and nose area may feel blocked, sore, and bruised.
- Mild to moderate discomfort is common and managed with pain relief
- There may be blood-stained tears or slight nasal bleeding
- Swelling and bruising around the eye and cheek are expected
- Use prescribed drops, ointment, and nasal sprays exactly as advised
- Avoid blowing your nose forcefully in the early days
Improvement over the following weeks
As bruising settles, tearing usually lessens and comfort improves. The small scar typically fades with time.
- Stitches are often removed after about one week if not dissolvable
- The silicone tube, if present, may stay in place for several weeks or months
- Most people feel social bruising reduces significantly over two weeks
- Contact the clinic urgently if pain worsens or vision drops suddenly
- Attend all follow-up visits to monitor healing and tube position
