Most people return to work about one to two weeks after eyelid surgery, depending on bruising, comfort, and job type.
Office and light duties
Desk-based work is often possible once pain is controlled and vision feels steady. Bruising may still be visible but can usually be covered with make-up when wounds have healed.
- Many patients resume light work after 7-10 days
- Use lubricating drops during screen tasks to ease dryness
- Plan shorter days or a phased return if possible
- Avoid strongly air-conditioned or very hot environments initially
- Check that you meet driving standards before commuting by car
Physical or public-facing roles
Jobs involving heavy lifting, dusty settings, or close public contact may need a longer break. Protecting your eyes and achieving a natural appearance are important.
- Discuss your role with the surgical team before and after surgery
- Delay strenuous work and contact activities for at least two weeks
- Consider sunglasses if you feel self-conscious about bruising
- Stop work and seek help if pain, swelling, or redness suddenly worsen
- Agree a personalised return-to-work plan at follow-up
