Most people return to work one to two weeks after external DCR surgery, depending on bruising, comfort, and job demands.
Office and light duties
Desk-based roles may be possible once pain is controlled and vision feels steady. You may still have visible bruising around the eye and nose.
- Many patients resume light work after about a week
- Use lubricating drops during screen time to ease dryness
- Plan shorter days at first if possible
- Avoid dusty or strongly air-conditioned rooms when you return
- Check driving suitability before commuting by car
Physical or outdoor work
Jobs involving heavy lifting, dirt, or risk of facial injury may need a longer break. Protecting the nose area and tear duct is essential.
- Discuss your duties with the surgical team before the operation
- Consider protective eyewear or masks if exposed to dust
- Avoid heavy lifting and straining for at least one to two weeks
- Stop work and seek help if pain or swelling suddenly worsen
- Plan follow-up visits around your work schedule
