How to manage swelling after eye surgery?

< 1 min read

Mild swelling around the eye is common after surgery and usually settles with simple measures.

Normal post-surgical swelling

The eyelids and surrounding skin may look puffy or bruised. This is part of the healing process, especially after procedures involving the lids or muscles.

  • Swelling is often worse in the morning and improves during the day
  • Slight redness or tenderness is common but should lessen over time
  • Cool compresses may ease discomfort if approved by your surgeon
  • Sleeping with the head slightly raised can reduce puffiness

When swelling needs urgent review

Increasing swelling with pain, discharge, or fever can indicate infection or bleeding. Quick action protects both comfort and vision.

  • Seek urgent advice if the eye becomes very tight, hard, or painful
  • Report any sudden drop in vision straight away
  • Follow instructions about lifting, bending, and strenuous activity
  • Do not apply ice or creams near the eye unless specifically advised
