Dry eye symptoms are common for a time after cataract surgery because the incision and temporary changes to the tear film can reduce lubrication. Management focuses on supporting the ocular surface while it recovers.
Supportive measures
Frequent use of preservative-free artificial tears, sometimes alongside lubricating gels at night, can ease grittiness and fluctuating vision. Managing any underlying blepharitis and avoiding excessive screen use or strong air conditioning in the early weeks may also help.
- Report severe or worsening pain, redness or vision loss promptly
- Use lubricants between, not immediately after, medicated drops unless instructed otherwise
- Warm compresses and lid hygiene may support meibomian gland function
- Dry eye often improves over weeks to months but may need ongoing care in susceptible individuals
